Spectral Vizcaya | An Evening of Illumination, Feb. 2021

In February 2021, Vizcaya commissioned a performance by Miami-based artist Sebastian Duncan-Portuondo. The piece brought to life Vizcaya’s history as fragments of light and color projected throughout the estate architecture and gardens for one-night of illuminated magic. Apparitions repopulated Vizcaya for a festive night of phantom memories that returned for a winter party. During Spectral Vizcaya, the museum’s exterior spaces hosted sculptures, projections, and performances that visualized the estate’s history through character sketches. As an illuminated gondola stood in Biscayne Bay, James Deering’s nieces perched in the gardens, and a team of smugglers infiltrated the grounds. Meanwhile, projections on the house and in a garden theater created colorful images that retold stories from the early days of the estate. Stained glass, analog projection machines, LEDs, and lights created a luminous atmosphere for the audience to explore.
