What do Gödel’s incompleteness theorems really show? And do they prove that Artificial Intelligence can never truly think or understand? In this seventh installment of The Mind and the Machine: Aquinas on AI, philosopher Michael Augros explores two of the most famous and controversial arguments ever made against artificial intelligence, arguments rooted in the groundbreaking work of logician Kurt Gödel. Some thinkers claim Gödel’s theorems show that no machine, no matter how advanced, could ever possess genuine intelligence or understanding. In this video, we ask whether those arguments actually succeed. To answer that question, this episode provides a careful, step-by-step explanation of Gödel’s two incompleteness theorems and then evaluates how they have been used by philosophers such as J. R. Lucas, Roger Penrose, and others to argue against the possibility of machine intelligence. This is one of the longer and more in-depth episodes in the series, because it is designed to be self-contained. No prior background in mathematical logic is required. This video is part of a ten-part series exploring whether artificial intelligence can truly think and understand, and what that question reveals about human intelligence, reason, and education.
