In this film HollyCoetzee, an equine sports science expert and the U.A.E.'s foremost bitless and barefoot trainer , tells us her reasons of choosing to ride bitless and barefoot. Her method of riding involves controlling the horse with subtle seat and voice cues instead of the bit and the bridle. Holly believes in a riding style based on mutual trust, respect and harmony. She disagrees with the viewpoint that the horse needs shoes to keep their feet strong and healthy, and the things we ask the horse to do in our sports-showjumping ,dressage are all unnatural things and the horse cannot possibly cope up with that without the aid of a shoe. Her method of training a barefoot horse involves movement, healthy diet and keeping them in a more natural way …including trimming the hoof to mimic the more natural hoof. She studied Equine science in university and her favourite paper was on the effects of horse’s hoof mechanism -with shoes and without. Holly wanted to find out scientifically which is a better approach. During her research she learnt about the natural hoof mechanism, it' s shock absorption capabilities and design that enables the hoof to expand when it hits the ground. A metal shoe on the horse actually restricts this natural movement... She talks about her experience with her horse Connor, who had Laminitis and Navicular disease, had very weak hoof and was advised to be put to sleep by the vets. Holly instead chose to take his shoes off and ride him bitless and barefoot.
