The Hue City Massacre

The Battle of Hue City was the bloodiest and most psychologically devastating of the Vietnam War, with over 10,000 soldiers and civilians being killed there in just under a month. The on the ground reporting by American journalists made this the turning point of the Vietnam in American minds, as it turned from a winnable war to one which the U.S. no longer wanted any part of. Civilian deaths were numerous in Hue City, with atrocities committed on both sides, though the Viet Cong killings far outnumbered their South Vietnamese and American counterparts. Reports suggest that 70% of Hue City’s civilian dwellings were destroyed over the course of that month. Modern scholars argue whether the civilian deaths were premeditated, with the targeting of intellectual elites being a primary focus of the Communist North Vietnamese.
