Andrea Maloney Schara does an informal interview with her uncle, Jimmy Maloney. She was interested in his ideas about this family business, which had grown from a roadside stand to a multi-million dollar complex. Jimmy had his own plans for the interview as he wanted to make a tape about how to actually make pottery. Eventually he got around to answering questions about the business, which he started after high school in 1938.business. http://www.williamsburgpottery.com/ab... Jimmy starts out by demonstrating how to make pottery and how he expects his potters to work. Clearly his talent and hard work combined with an ability to risk and to do it his way, makes for a great story of success against great odds. Jimmy had a charming, never say die, attitude that stood him well through years of turmoil in building and maintaining his business. In reminiscing about the past he recalls those who helped him and the lucky breaks that came his way. Jimmy notes how fortunate he was not to have to serve in the service during WW II. The interviewer was somewhat surprised that he did not talk much about his family as most of his family worked at the pottery for many years. However he tells his story the way he saw things develop, and tells us what he believes are the principles that made for his success. All of these factors plus many more combined to help make his business the dominant import business along the east coast for many years.
