Tintagel Castle, believed by some to have been the birthplace of King Arthur, dates back to the 5th or 6th century, when a Celtic monastery was founded on the site. The castle was later built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, in the 13th century, and it served as a strategic stronghold during the Middle Ages. The castle was abandoned in the 16th century and fell into ruin, but it remains an important historical site and a popular tourist attraction. According to legend, Merlin's Cave is a natural cavern that lies below Tintagel Castle. It is said to have been the place where Merlin, the wizard of Arthurian legend, brought the infant Arthur to be hidden from his enemies. The cave can only be accessed at low tide, as at high tide, the sea covers the entrance.
