Twitter & IG @chimezieiii A project that has been in the works for over 4 years, “FlySiifu’s” is the collaborated effort between Fly Anakin and Pink Siifu; two prominent figures in today’s underground hip hop scene. Thematically, this album centers around a record shop that is owned and run by the two artists. While the songs and lyrics themselves don’t necessarily directly mention and describe the record store, the whole project does sound and feel like something you would hear in the background while browsing the catalog of a hip, soul and jazz founded record shop. The album skits further expand on this fictional record store as we hear entertaining voicemails and interactions from the FlySiifu’s owners and at times disgruntled customers. The whole theme and idea feels extremely organic and really shines through in pretty much every aspect of this album but not in an overbearing or over the top way. Lyrically, when we focus on the content of their lyrics, we find the two emcees discussing black empowerment, racism, exploitation, nostalgia, growth and a variety of different subjects that are thought provoking but easy to listen to and grasp at the same time. For the most part, the raps and content just feel like two friends kicking it back and discussing whatever thoughts they may have about their current or past situations. Fly Anakin does seem to be the standout performer in regards to technical skill and is definitely the component in the duo that brings about a more gritty and rugged hip hop feeling into the mix while still effortlessly flowing on top of the silky jazz and soul loops. Pink Siifu performs great on this project as well but shines in different areas compared to Anakin, his voice and demeanor are exemplified by the production of this project and at times become the highlight of the songs just because of how smooth and relaxing his tempo and delivery is. Combining the duo’s strengths together, you have an extremely feel-good and relaxing yet prolific piece of art that a casual or hardcore hip hop fan can listen to and appreciate. Sonically, I almost want to say the most amount of detail and attention probably went into this aspect of the album. As “FlySiifu’s” revolves around a record store, it only makes sense that you utilize the hundreds of jazz and soul records that one usually finds at record stores. Most, if not, all songs on here are directly sampling and looping some form of older jazz and soul records to really commemorate the atmosphere of digging through dozens of vinyl crates to find the perfect sound that thousands of producers look for. The warm and free flowing production works perfectly for the two rappers, going hand in hand in a way where the appreciation for either the sound or lyrics is almost indistinguishable. And while the overall sound doesn’t switch up too much, the different producers on here bring just enough of their own touch to bring out a slight variety and change in the instrumentals. The few neo-soul cuts on here are ridiculously gorgeous. They are small but important moments in the album for the listener to enjoy. Overall, the beats are damn near flawless on here, relaxing but intriguing the listener at the same time. All in all, I really enjoyed this album. It’s fantastic on a first listen but still has those gems that can be found after multiple dedicated listens. Definitely a highlight for this year and both artists. Thanks for reading and watching!
