In this video, we introduce the fundamentals of thermochemistry and examine how the First Law of Thermodynamics applies to chemical reactions. We begin by discussing how chemical reactions involve energy transformations, specifically the conversion of chemical energy stored in molecular bonds into thermal energy. Using the combustion of hydrogen as an example, we analyze how the energy within a system changes during a reaction and how this can lead to heat transfer between the system and its surroundings. To understand this process more clearly, we apply the First Law of Thermodynamics to a chemical reaction system and examine the energy balance over different stages of the reaction. This helps illustrate how internal energy can change form within a system while still obeying the fundamental law of conservation of energy. We also discuss how temperature differences between the system and the environment drive heat transfer, and why the surrounding environment is often treated as a thermal reservoir (or heat bath) in thermodynamic analysis. Finally, we introduce the important thermochemistry concepts of exothermic and endothermic reactions, explaining how these classifications depend on whether heat is transferred out of or into the reaction system. #chemistry #thermochemistry #thermodynamics #energy #heat #endothermic #exothermic #system #closedsystem #opensystem #isolatedsystem #surroundings
