Nyhavn (Danish for "new harbor") is a central port in the Danish capital Copenhagen and one of the city's most important landmarks. Completed in 1673, the Nyhavn canal was commissioned to create a spur canal from Copenhagen Harbor to Kongens Nytorv Square. The colorful gabled houses on both sides of the small harbor arm were built primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries. The harbor milieu spawned numerous taverns early on, and the area remains one of Copenhagen's best-known entertainment districts today, with its many restaurants, beer halls and dance halls, along with Istedgade. Harbour tours and museum ships remind us of the time as a trading port, the importance of which was lost to the 400-meter-long and three-meter-deep canal at the beginning of the 20th century at the latest.
