At an open house for Tagwii Recovery Center, Gerard Mauthe, an alcohol and drug counselor, was making dreamcatchers when Lydia Four Horns from the Minneapolis American Indian Center’s Two Rivers Art Gallery asked if he was using natural string. When explaining the current use of synthetic sinew, Lydia shared her newfound appreciation for traditional rope and weaving techniques. Inspired, Gerard decided to challenge himself: could he make a 100% traditional dreamcatcher? Out of season for milkweed and dogbane, he turned to fresh hemp, twisting together a durable string from the skin of the cannabis plant. By tying multiple stalks together, he created flexible hoops—normally difficult because of cannabis’s frail stalks. With patience and care, he spun a fully traditional dreamcatcher made entirely from cannabis. The presence of Winona LaDuke’s work was felt throughout the process. As an environmental activist, she has long led efforts to revive Indigenous hemp farming in Minnesota. Gifting the dreamcatcher to Winona was an honor in itself—a symbolic gesture connecting traditional craft, ecological respect, and Indigenous resilience.
