Rewilding Salmon Eggs Above Shasta Dam —— Chief Caleen Sisk is passionate in advocating for an ancient way of thinking about salmon. Now, as a co-equal partner in a new partnership with state and federal agencies, Chief Sisk, of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe has been able to apply her traditional knowledge and beliefs in important ways. In bringing to life an innovative salmon egg incubation system, we acknowledge the elders and ancestors that grew up on the Winnemem Waywaket (McCloud River) before the dam flooded out the Winnemem and blocked the salmon from the high waters. As we look ahead to our salmon coming back from Aotearoa (New Zealand), and establishing a volitional swimway around Shasta Dam. Turning away from the hatchery approach, that favors using confined and controlled spaces, in the second year of the project, the Winnemem crew used a series of tanks, pipes and river rocks, to mimic conditions in which the eggs have evolved over millennia. The results are surprising.
