Sustainable livestock and animal-source food (ASF) systems play a critical role in improving nutrition, reducing poverty, increasing gender equity, strengthening resilience, ensuring food security, and supporting positive health outcomes. Over 1 billion people globally rely on livestock for livelihoods, food security, and nutritious diets. This is particularly important for women as 2/3 of livestock managers are female. The livestock sector contributes approximately 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions each year with developed countries contributing a large share of this production, but with improved management, this footprint can be reduced. As the effects of climate change intensify, Feed the Future partners are answering the call through the research, development, and scaling of climate-smart agriculture innovations and best practices. This webinar will highlight some approaches to sustainably produce livestock in a way that meets development objectives and mitigates climate impacts. Our panel of speakers includes colleagues from the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems, the International Livestock Research Institute, and the Farm Animal Investment Risk & Return Initiative. The panelists will share country-based experiences working at the nexus of livestock and climate change. The session will also include a discussion on critical factors for success in the coming years and the challenges and opportunities for collaboration across sectors.
