Were THOMAS CROMWELL and OLIVER CROMWELL related? | Famous people who were related to one another

One was KILLED by Henry VIII, the other is a famous KING KILLER. Both shaped English history and have never been forgotten by it, yet their fates could hardly have been more different. They shared a surname and lived within a century of each other, but how were Thomas and Oliver Cromwell related, if at all and why might Oliver not have been a Cromwell at all? In this video from History Calling, we’ll start with a brief history of Thomas Cromwell, earl of Essex who was Henry VIII’s favourite minister until his epic fall from grace resulted in him losing his head in 1540 after being blamed for the disastrous marriage of Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves. We’ll then hear a brief overview of the life of Oliver Cromwell, best remembered as the man who killed Charles I (or rather, was instrumental in having him killed) and becoming Lord Protector of England. I’ll then show you (spoiler alert), how these two men were connected and what their places were within one of the most famous English families (excluding royalty) of the 16th and 17th centuries. We’ll look at the Welsh roots of the Cromwell family and at how a very unusual and very modern decision made by one man to change his surname to that of his mother’s, ensured that Thomas and Oliver shared their family name, even though Oliver Cromwell was arguably meant to be called Oliver Williams and even acknowledged this fact during his lifetime.
