You get a wonderful sense of the man here, from the traumatic childhood which so influenced his writing, to the dashing man about town who loved a good dinner party to the social campaigner. And of course the writer. There's something a little mystical about seeing the actual desk where he wrote Oliver Twist. It took me a little while to get into Dickens - I blame lacklustre teachers - but once I was in the right frame of mind I was hooked.
