Former West Bengal Governor Tathagata Roy reveals the suppressed history of the Great Calcutta Killings of August 16, 1946 - one of the most devastating communal riots in Indian history that has been systematically hidden from public discourse. In this powerful #SangamTalks presentation, Roy exposes how political leaders orchestrated mass violence, the role of British complicity, and why this crucial chapter remains absent from mainstream historical narratives. He draws parallels to contemporary politics and discusses the ongoing suppression of historical truth. Key Topics Covered: The Cabinet Mission Plan and Nehru's fateful press conference Suhrawardy's orchestration of Direct Action Day Eyewitness accounts of unprecedented violence British administrative complicity Hindu retaliation and Sikh leadership Comparison with Jallianwala Bagh and Chuknagar massacres Modern attempts to whitewash history This is essential viewing for understanding the true cost of Partition and the importance of historical honesty. The Great Calcutta Killings of 16th August 1946, euphemistically called 'Direct Action Day', was a desperate bid by the Muslim League to achieve Pakistan, which succeeded. It was conceived by Mohammed Ali Jinnah and implemented by Husseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, then Premier of Undivided Bengal. The British Governor, Sir Frederick Burrows, was a silent but willing participant, and the Communist Party lent it wholehearted support. The casualties could not be counted, but are estimated at 15,000 dead and countless grievously injured. It shook the Congress leaders into conceding Pakistan. About the Author Tathagata Roy, the former governor of Tripura and Meghalaya, and erstwhile president of the BJP West Bengal, grew up with stories of how theirs was an affluent family which was forced to flee their country and came to India as refugees from what is now Bangladesh.
