Emergency medical services, including six ambulances and a medic car, scrambled to the scene. Firefighters managed to extract passengers from inside the tram. Their conditions are currently unclear. Civil protection teams have set up a tent to assist the injured. Authorities have launched a probe to investigate the cause of the tragedy. The incident involved a Tramlink tram, which can carry a maximum of 66 passengers. Stretching to 25 metres long, the trams consist of three connecting carriages. They form a new fleet purchased by local transport company ATM, which has invested £160million (A$300m) A total of 74 Tramlink trams entered service in Milan on February 20. They are expected to replace the older trams over the next two years. It came after a tragic funicular crash hit another European city last year. Witnesses described the car crumpling like a “cardboard box” when it hit the wall. Dozens sprinted up the steep road to find the car had flipped on its side and was torn apart into splintered metal. Distressed onlookers can be heard screaming “there’s kids under there” seconds after the cable car with tourists on board derailed and smashed into a hotel. Three British residents were among the 16 victims, while another 20 were injured.
