High on a Tasmanian mountaintop, The Keep is the ultimate off-grid luxury escape — and my most epic stay yet! 🏔 Welcome to one of the most extraordinary off-grid stays in Australia — The Keep. Perched high on a mountain in Gould’s Country (North-East Tasmania), this castle-like retreat overlooks the stunning Blue Tier and is surrounded by ancient temperate rainforest. It’s an architectural icon, built for complete privacy and deep connection to nature. The design is inspired by the fortified stone keeps of England and Europe — defensive towers built in the Middle Ages as the last refuge if a castle fell to enemies. The word “keep” means to hold or protect, and here that idea has been reimagined for the modern world — a place built to hold and protect human connection. The journey is part of the magic. From the moment you start the winding drive up the mountain, you weave between enormous granite boulders, climb higher and higher, and then — suddenly — there it is. A dramatic stone structure standing alone at 650 metres elevation. I remember just sitting there for a moment, completely blown away that a place like this exists in Tasmania. Inside, you’ll find Tasmanian timbers, handmade furnishings, and a moody, sanctuary-like bedroom level — the perfect hideaway during wild weather. Upstairs, the space opens into light-filled living areas with views that stretch all the way to Flinders Island on a clear day. There’s a chef’s kitchen stocked with local produce, wine, and whisky, a cosy fireplace, and even a private library. 🛁 And then there’s the outdoor bath, possibly what the stay is most known for — carved from a single granite boulder and tucked between giant stone sentinels. Sitting here under the stars, surrounded by nothing but wilderness and the occasional wombat wandering past, is something I’ll never forget. Despite losing my drone to a freak wind gust and pranging our hire car on the way in, it was still the best experience I’ve had to date! I honestly believe this is the top accommodation experience in Tasmania. For me, this environment — remote, wild, and completely off-grid — is the ultimate. It’s proof that sustainability and luxury can exist in the same breath. 🙏 A huge thank you to Jono and Sue, the incredible hosts and owner/operators who have pushed the boundaries to bring this special experience to life.
