Foreign object in eye / on cornea, treatment and removal - A State of Sight #42

In this episode of A State of Sight, Isaac Porter, MD discusses foreign objects that can affect the surface of the eye. Unfortunately, when this occurs, the foreign material may become lodged into the front of the eye and may be impossible to remove simply by blinking. If it cannot be flushed out from the eye with irrigation, it will likely be necessary to remove the foreign body medically under magnification. Using the same microscope (slit lamp) that is routinely used for eye examination, a particle can be viewed and then removed from the surface of the eye with specialized instruments or brushes. This leaves a break in the outer coating of the eye and it may be necessary to use antibiotics to prevent infection. If the material has been present in the eye for some time, an infection may have already started in the area and may need treatment antibiotics. When a piece of metal gets into the eye, it may begin to rust and leave a larger area of rust under the metal. This rust ring can also be removed as it can interfere with vision and healing.
