Close of video camera 3. SOUNDBITE (English) Joseph Wu, Taiwan Foreign Minister: “And they also have their own global objective. Their global objective is that they want to use Taiwan as a test ground. If they are able to successfully shape the results of the Taiwan elections, they will try to apply their tactics on other countries. I think many of you already know that in this year, there will be more than 40 free and fair and democratic elections around the world. And Taiwan is the beginning of these democratic elections. And if China is successful in shaping the results of our election, and I am sure it will come after every one of those countries that they think they want to make influence on.” 4. Wide of news conference 5. Photojournalist 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Joseph Wu, Taiwan Foreign Minister: “In our jargon, we call it cognitive warfare. And primarily, there are three categories. The first category is to tell the Taiwanese people that these particular election is a choice in-between war and peace. They do military drills, they also engage in grey zone activities and they are also very blatant official statements coming out of Chinese official agencies.” 7. Journalist asking question 8. Wide of Wu listening to journalist 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Joseph Wu, Taiwan Foreign Minister: “If you look at the Chinese activities in the South China Sea, it’s also rampant. They are a threat against the Philippines, especially in maritime domain, is also very serious. And the PLA officials also say that they are going to send their surface ships to the disputed water in the East China Sea every day. That’s what they say. And all these shows that authoritarianism is trying to expand their scope of influence within the first island chain. And I would like to tell you that authoritarianism in the PRC is not going to be limited by the first island chain. I think they will be doing exercises beyond the first island chain.” 10. Pan of hall, mobile phones ringing because of national alert on projectile fired by China over island’s southern part 11. Wu waiting for national alert to go off STORYLINE: Taiwan’s foreign minister Joseph Wu warned the rest of the world on China’s possible interference on elections in 2024, during a news conference on Tuesday afternoon. Wu's comments came ahead Taiwan's presidential election on Saturday Jan. 13. "Their global objective is that they want to use Taiwan as a test ground. If they are able to successfully shape the results of the Taiwan elections, they will try to apply their tactics on other countries," said Wu. During the news conference in Taipei, the Defence Ministry issued an alert saying China has launched a satellite ahead of Saturday's election. The bilingual alert sent to residents' mobile phones cautioned in English that there was a missile flyover. The Defense Ministry later issued a statement apologizing to the public for the faulty English translation and clarifying that China had launched a rocket carrying a satellite -- not a missile. China has repeatedly expressed its disdain for the front-runner in Taiwan's presidential election, current Vice President William Lai of the Democratic Progressive Party. Beijing has called Lai “a destroyer of peace” and a separatist, and favours the more China-friendly Kuomintang, or Nationalist Party, whose presidential candidate is Hou Yu-ih.
