Craig Newmark tells the story of turning Craigslist.org into one of the most popular websites in the world earning more than $25 MILLION per year. After working at the computer company IBM for more than 17 years, Craig Newmark launched the classified ads website www.Craigslist.org in 1995. Initially, it was just a webpage that featured local events in the San Francisco Bay Area where Newmark lived. By 2002, thanks to word of mouth and the immense popularity the site was gaining Craigslist expanded to New York and Boston and later became available to more than 450 cities worldwide across 50 countries. The expansion helped grow the user base to over 15 MILLION unique visitors each month. Craigslist has no banner ads, to earn money for hosting and expenses, they began charging a $25 fee to post jobs in Los Angeles and New York. The chief technology officer Jim Buckmaster took over as the CEO of the company in 2000 and Craig Newmark became the Chairman of the board of the privately held Craigslist. Craigslist.com is run out of a victorian home in San Francisco, CA and employs 23 people. In 2004 the popular auction website eBay acquired a 25% equity stake in Craigslist. In 2005, the company made $25 MILLION dollars. Craigslist.org is the 7th most viewed English language website in the world and Craig Newmark is regarded as one of the most influential tech entrepreneurs of our time.
