When I was 16, I fell in love with a girl because of a brief, but magical kiss. It happened at twilight, on an evening at the end of summer, just before school started up again. A bunch of us kids were running through the corn-field, up and down the rows as if through a maze, laughing and calling out - the rattling corn stalks distorting our voices so we sounded sometimes closer, sometimes farther away across the field. Suddenly this girl and I both turned a corner and came face to face. Without warning, she stood up on tiptoes and gave me a quick kiss on the lips and then ran off. And I - I was in la-la-la-love! #TheBeast #JeremyReeves #CornellandDiehl    • The Beast: Monster or Lover? | Tobacco Review   Recently I’ve been similarly kissed by a new (to me) blend from Cornell and Diehl, and once again I am in la-la-la-love. I’m talking about The Beast, a re-release of a small batch Va/Per - but a Va/Per unlike any I’ve ever smoked. First - the notes from the tin: I like to stick my nose in the tin the moment the lid peels off, and the first thing I noticed was a deep vinegar smell, like stepping into a New York deli - pickles and salami and even very light chocolate. So I put her into a jar and let her sit for a couple of days, and when I opened up the jar again most of the vinegar had left, replaced by the smell of cream soda. When I picked up a pinch of the tobacco, it felt a little moist, and I was worried that I needed to let it sit for a while and dry out. But it lighted easily and stayed lit. In fact, I found that as I smoked through the bowl it burned delightfully, with an abundance of digestible vapor. And as long as I didn’t let my attention wander, I only needed a couple of re-lights. The Beast is supposedly as marinated in Rum as a Pirate on a 7-day shore leave, but at first my nose didn’t detect any booziness at all. I finally found the Rum when it hit me that what I had taken for cream soda was actually a subtle creamy rum perfume. In other words, though definitely tipsy The Beast is not a raging drunk, pushing the alcohol component forward in your face. It’s just got a jolly sweet buzz on, enough to tempt your palate for all the other flavors to come. Speaking of other flavors - I don’t know where Jeremy found it, but even the Perique in this blend seems to be in a good mood. Spicy it is, but only playfully so. It nips at your palate instead of chomping down on it. And though there is no Latakia in this blend, the dark Kentucky and the Cavendish twins take its place to provide the darker brown notes - but brown like brown sugar. It wasn’t until my third date with The Beast that her personality as a Va/Per finally slipped out. Va/Pers have a distinct identifying flavor created by the mating of Perique and Virginias. They have a slight astringency that makes saliva collect under your tongue in the corners of your mouth. While my English blends feel like a dive downward into savory pools, Va/Pers are like jumping up into a cloud of lemon blossoms. The Beast additionally sweetens all that up with her Dark Fired Kentucky and Cavendishes. The Beast does have a naughty side, though, and if you’re not careful she’ll sucker punch you with a nicotine fist. Perique has a special chemical make-up that changes your pH balance, which in turn allows nicotine to pass more easily through the membranes of your mouth. The result: Va/Pers can be a nicotine joyride. I’ve read a few reviews of The Beast whose writers said they thought the blend needed a one-bowl limit because of it’s 50% Perique content! But just between you and me, I felt the nicotine caress was just right, a perfect complement to the Beast’s sweet/sour dark brown sugar taste, drizzled with shots of rum. All in all, The Beast is a phony monster, all darkly terrible on the outside like the Evil Queen but as sweet as Snow White on the inside. The first time I smoked a bowl of this blend, it was like all of my favorite flavors from all of my favorite blends had found their way into this one tin. Imagine if all the best qualities of all the girlfriends you’ve had since your 16-year-old crush came together in one woman. You’d be in la-la-la-love too, just like I am. My recommendation?
