Part 1. Alfred Dubois (violin) and Marcel Maas (piano) playing Bach's Violin Sonata No. 6 in G (BWV1019). Recorded for Columbia in 1933. Quite good sound for the time. My other recent Dubois posting got favorable responses so here's more. He made only a couple of dozen 78's. He spent the war years in France but refused to play for the Nazis so he spent most of his time teaching. He died soon after the war. Had he lived into the LP era he would certainly be better known. A colleague described him as possessing "perfect equilibrium between instinct and intelligence". He shows much more restraint than many of his contemporaries but certainly isn't a human metronome so like many of today's violinists. Marcel Maas (1897-1950) was also highly regarded for his restraint. He too died young. These records can be appreciated much more by comparing to other Bach recordings of the time.
