I used to play retro games on PC and Nintendo Switch Online, but recently I fell in love with CRTs again and felt a craving to experience classic games on original hardware. In this video, I explore why playing on original cartridges offers a sense of tactile ownership and control that digital files simply cannot match. We look at the unique ritual of selecting a game, the mechanical satisfaction of inserting the cartridge, and how this physical friction actually prepares the mind for the magic of the game. We also discuss the serious downsides of digital gaming, such as the risk of content disappearing overnight due to expired licenses or store closures like the Wii U and 3DS eShops. Unlike digital downloads, a physical cartridge is a liquid asset and a permanent piece of history that gives you perpetual access without needing permission from a server. I also cover the psychological benefit of avoiding choice paralysis, as committing to a single cartridge helps players master games rather than skipping through a list of ROMs. While I still play some games digitally, engaging with the physical world provides a meaningful escape from the virtualization of modern life. Does owning the cartridge change the experience for you, or is digital just easier?
