Witham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Essex, and around 40 miles northeast of central London, is the town of Witham (pronounced 'WIT-um'). Geographically Witham is situated on the River Brain, and adjacent to the old Roman road between London and Colchester. Archaeologists have discovered the remains of a Roman temple and pottery kiln in the area, hinting at Roman occupation in Witham as a stopover point. The name 'Witham' is part Brythonic (derived from 'gwydd', meaning 'woods' in modern Welsh) and part Saxon ('ham' meaning 'home' or 'estate'). In 1148 the manor of Witham was given to the Knights Templar. In circa 1154 King Stephen confirmed to the Templars the right to an existing market at Witham. The initial settlement of Witham is believed to have originated around Chipping Hill to the north of the town centre of the present. The Templars shifted development south to a stretch of the London-Colchester road, subsequently known as Newland Street, where the bulk of the town centre stands to this day. It was in this area that a second market began, which would eventually outgrow the initial market at Chipping Hill. In addition to its growing marketplace, the Newland area of Witham became a coaching stop for those travelling between London and Colchester owing to its placement directly along the Roman road. There is evidence of cloth manufacture in late medieval Witham although this industry had eventually declined by the 17th century. In the 18th century, after the discovery of a mineral-bearing spa, Witham experienced a brief period as an affluent spa town. In 1843 the railway arrived in Witham. To this day it stands on the Great Eastern Main Line between London Liverpool Street and Norwich. Furthermore it serves as a junction station for trains to and from Braintree. It was also historically the junction station for services to Maldon up until 1964 when the Beeching Axe claimed the Witham to Maldon branch line. A statue of Dorothy L. Sayers can be seen on Newland Street. Sayers was a crime writer and poet, as well as a student of classical languages. She is known for her translation of Dante's Divine Comedy, originally written in early 14th century Italian. Sayers spent the latter years of her life in Witham, where she died in 1957. Singer Olly Murs was born and raised in Witham. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
