Cubs’ late comeback fails in 28-21 defeat By MICKEY HUMPHREY Tribune-Herald sportswriter DUNCANVILLE — Panther Stadium hasn't been a very nice place for Pilot Point. The Bearcats have been eliminated from the Class 2A playoffs the last two years there, by Lorena and McGregor. Pilot Point, taking advantage of an interception and the running of Richard Anderson, snapped the jinx with a wild 28-21 win over the Clifton Cubs in a 2A regional playoff game Friday night. Anderson, with a darting and slashing running style, rushed for 237 yards on 26 carries and scored all four Pilot Point touchdowns on runs of 18, one, 68 and 19 yards as the Bearcats rallied from a 14-0 deficit to advance to the quarterfinals. The Bearcats will face Mart next week. The game was deadlocked at 21-21 when Clifton quarterback Brent Finney rifled a pass intended for Chris Sedberry that was intercepted by Ely Sledge at the Cubs' 49-yard line with just 8:57 left in the game. It took seven plays before Anderson got the touchdown on a 19-yard run with 5:47 left. Clifton's comeback chances were hindered when Willie Sedberry let the ensuing kickoff roll free with Pilot Point's Keith Williams falling on the ball at the Clifton 13. The Cubs dodged a bullet when Pilot Point quarterback Frankie Jones fumbled at the 18 four plays later with 3:52 left. The Cubs drove to their own 46-yard line, but Oliver was stopped three yards short on fourth-and-six with only 1:41 left. Clifton ends its season at 10-2-1. The Cubs stunned the Bearcats just 78 seconds into the game when Finney found a wide-open Bryan Prescher streaking down the right sideline for a 68-yard touchdown pass. Facing third-and-six at their 32, Prescher simply ran past Jones and strolled into the end zone to give the Cubs a 7-0 lead. The Cubs got a huge break to set up their second touchdown when punter Michael Odom was roughed by Pilot Point's Jamie Ellis and Troy Hammons at the Bearcats' 48. Three plays later, Oliver, getting a great block on the corner by Brent Belcher, took an option pitch from Finney, split two Pilot Point defenders and raced 39 yards for the touchdown, giving the Cubs a 14-0 lead. Pilot Point finally came alive, moving 60 yards in seven plays on their third possession. Anderson got the touchdown on a nifty 18-yard run with 8:15 left in the first half. Anderson added a one-yard TD with 47 seconds left in the first half to tie the game. Then, just as Clifton did to start the game, Pilot Point stunned the Cubs when Anderson, taking a pitch from Jones, raced 68 yards for the touchdown, breaking the 14-14 tie just 21 seconds into the second half. The Cubs knotted the game at 21 with an impressive 66-yard, 11-play drive that was highlighted by a 21-yard hook-and-ladder play. Facing fourth-and-goal at the three, Finney hit Oliver for the touchdown just inside the right corner of the end zone with 5:20 left in the third quarter.
