What does the Bible really mean when it uses the word thanksgiving? In this teaching, we continue a careful word study examining how thanksgiving is used in Scripture — not according to modern culture, but according to biblical context. After reviewing Old Testament passages from Leviticus, Psalms, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, and Jonah - last week we looked at the first New Testament occurrence of thanksgiving in 2 Corinthians 4. In this lesson, we explore how thanksgiving is used in the New Testament, focusing on 2 Corinthians 9 and Philippians 4. We see that thanksgiving is not merely an emotional response but a prepared offering brought before God — expressed through sacrificial giving, prayer, and obedient service. By examining these passages in context, we uncover the continuity between Old Testament worship practices and New Testament Christian living. This study emphasizes careful observation of the text, letting each context speak for itself while highlighting how thanksgiving functions as a tangible act of worship and a response to God’s grace. This is not a finished thesis, but the first step in examining how the New Testament uses the word — one passage at a time. Whether you’re following our series from the beginning or joining in today, this lesson will strengthen your understanding of what true biblical thanksgiving is and how it should shape your daily walk with the Lord.
