One of the craziest things about Wood Badge is the fixation of critters. Each patrol in Wood Badge is personified by an animal. Be forewarned if you're going to Wood Badge you are going to become a diehard fan of your critter. You might even find yourself dancing around celebrating it. All this madness has a reason. You will discover the patrol method that Baden-Powell perfected and installed into the Scouting movement. After all, why should only the youth have fun in Scouting? The first patrols on Brownsea Island Camp were the Wolves, Bulls, Curlews, and Ravens. None of these patrol names are used at traditional USA Wood Badge. The Wood Badge patrols are formed according to an established order and most things are done following this regimen. Patrols are assigned, depending on the enrollment, always in the following order: 1. Beaver 2. Bobwhite 3. Eagle 4. Fox 5. Owl 6. Bear 7. Buffalo 8. Antelope Sometimes patrols are left out if there are not enuff participants. 5-8 Scouters in each. The Wood Badge song uses the patrol critters and each patrol and alumni are encouraged to participate. A Wood Badge patrol can induct their Patrol Guide (Staff) into the critter culture. Please discuss with your Patrol Guide before announcing it to the troop.
