Fonio is one of Africa’s oldest cultivated cereals. Grown for thousands of years, it remains underutilized in many regions despite its resilience and cultural value. This tiny, fast-growing grain tolerates drought and thrives in poor soils. It plays a vital role in food security, especially in West Africa, where it is a staple in local diets. Rich in iron and fiber, fonio is highly nutritious and naturally gluten-free. It’s cooked as porridge or couscous, baked in bread and used for brewing beer. In some cultures, fonio is considered a sacred food and symbolizes prosperity. It’s often served at weddings, festivals and ceremonies. Fonio is more than just a grain – it’s a powerful opportunity crop to nourish communities and preserve traditions! The Crop Trust supports efforts to conserve fonio’s genetic diversity and promote its use. Through BOLDER, part of the BOLD project, and other initiatives, like the Power of Diversity Funding Facility and Vegetables4Life, we’re working to bring opportunity crops into the spotlight.
