Achocha is a plant which belongs to the Cyclanthera genus. The origin of this plant's scientific name epithet (pedata) means 'palmately divided - with the lateral divisions two cleft'. A fast growing vine with hollow cucumber-like fruit. Is a slender tropical vine indigenous to South America. It can grow up to 40 feet in length with long tendrils for climbing. The leaves are 4 to 5 inches wide and segmented. The inside of the ripe fruit is hollow (sort of like a bell pepper), with several black seeds attached to a placenta. Caigua is currently cultivated as a food in the Caribbean, Central and South America. A type of flowering edible vegetable, it mainly grows as an annual/perennial plant - which means it can have a varying lifetime - from 1 year to several. Achocha is normally fairly low maintenance and is normally quite easy to grow, as long as a level of basic care is provided throughout the year. Being aware of the basic soil, sun and water preferences will result in a happier and healthier plant. Mexico is believed to be where Achocha originates from.
