The most accurate way to get a weight on your pigs is to use a scale. This is not always feasible for everyone, so I am going to walk through the steps to take to use the tape measurement method for getting the weights. At the IPPBA Show & Expo in Missouri this past June, they did a comparison on a few pigs getting the tape method and the scale weights. The tape method wasn't exact but was found to be very close to the actual weight of the pig. The key to getting the correct weight lies in getting the correct measurements. The girth is taken directly behind the front legs and the tape needs to be pulled snug to get the accurate measurement. The length measurement is taken by measuring from right behind the ears of the pig to the base of the tail. This measurement will be different if the pig is looking down while the measurement is taken, so for this reason, the pig should have its head up at a level line to get the most accurate reading.
