Carney calls Trump tariff threats on European countries over Greenland an “escalation”

Asked Sunday about his stance on President Donald Trump’s threats to put further tariffs on eight countries standing against U.S. plans to annex Greenland, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “concerned” about the “escalation” of what he called a “serious situation.” Beyond those remarks, however, Carney made no further mention of Trump’s latest act of coercion in his administration’s pursuit of Greenland. Instead, he re-emphasized Canada’s commitment to defending the “sovereignty” and “territorial integrity” of the autonomous Danish territory – noting that decisions about the future of Greenland is up to the Greenlanders and Danes. If applied, Trump's threatened tariffs could see 10 per cent duties levied on Feb. 1, with an increase to 25 per cent in June if no deal on Greenland is reached.
