In 2016, a small group of women from the Mara region of northern Tanzania, joined a participatory video project to explore their experiences of a local practice known as ‘Nyumba Nthobu’. Nyumba Nthobu is a tradition prevalent in three communities: Kurya, Gita and Jaluo, by which childless women known as 'Mamas' can legally ‘marry’ another woman to work as a surrogate mother; providing her with children. The sexual partners of the ‘Wife’, as she is known, are chosen by the Mama (often according to their perceived ability to father male children), and typically include married men, which often breeds wider conflict. The project was facilitated by InsightShare (www.insightshare.org) in partnership with the United Nations Association of Tanzania (http://una.or.tz) and the United Nations Association of Finland (www.ykliitto.fi).
