Thumb pain and dysfucntion can come in many different flavours and causes in this video i highlight a couple muscles that are responsible for thumb function, primarly extension Abductor Pollicis Longus ( APL) is situated in the extensor compartment of the wrist , originates from the ulna, radius and is covered by the Extensor Digitorum Longus , it has several subdivisions and it travels in a parallel direction which it terminates in a central tendon. It travels through the extensor retinaculum and inserts into the trapezium, abductor pollis brevis and the anterior oblique ligament. The other subdivisions are superficial and originate from the ulna , interosseous membrane, these twp parts are connected to a small area of connective tissue and terminate in a tendon to metacarpal. APL is responsible for facilitating movement of the thumb, interesting fact it usually unites with the Supinator muscle . It is ultimately 3 muscles in one Extensor Longus, brevis and Abductor pollicis longus all sharing a similar region and action. It is innervated by the deep branch of the radial nerve (c7-c8). Its prime function includes abduction of the thumb and extension of the first carpometacarpal joint but also assists in radial deviation and flexion of the wrist. BE AWESOME AT WHAT YOU DO!
