Welcome to Understanding Different Types of Hearings — part of the Civil Law Training Programme at Find a McKenzie Friend. In this short summary, we’ll cover the core points you need to know as a McKenzie Friend trainee. When supporting a Litigant in Person, one of your key responsibilities is to help them understand the kind of hearing they’re attending. Not all hearings are trials — some are purely procedural. Here are the most common types: Case Management and Directions Hearings set the timetable and structure. Review Hearings check progress. Fact-Finding Hearings deal with disputed allegations — especially in family law. Interim Hearings deal with urgent or temporary issues. And Final Hearings or trials resolve the dispute and lead to court orders. Hearings can take place in person, remotely, or even just on paper. As a McKenzie Friend, your role is to guide — not to speak or act for the client. You help them prepare emotionally and practically, stay calm, and understand what’s happening at every stage. By learning these distinctions, you empower your client to participate confidently and reduce the fear and confusion that so many Litigants in Person experience. Want to go deeper? Watch the full lecture, download the checklist, and complete your quiz. You’re one step closer to becoming a trusted, knowledgeable McKenzie Friend.
