The new documentary film on Dhrupad, the oldest vocal genre of Indian classical music. The film tells a story of Ustad Saiduddin Dagar's family who have devoted their life to the art of Dhrupad and continue preserving this old tradition of their ancestors. Recently one of the Dhrupad exponents, Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, has died in Mumbai. He used to come to Varanasi every year for Dhrupad Mela. For the last two years he was unable to visit the city due to the weak state of his health. He gave an extensive interview to Dr. Chatterjee. This interview along with the song of Dhrupad performed by the two brothers and accompanied by images in Indian traditional style has become the spiritual heart of the documentary. The film as well as the genre of Dhrupad is based on improvisation. The flowering of the genre falls on period of Akbar. It is considered to have absorbed and developed all the best traditions of the past. The co-existence of inner concentration, earnestness and spiritual elevation co-exist is the basic feature of Dhrupad character. This character was put in the foundation of the documentary by Dr. Chatterjee.
