Theory X managers tend to take a pessimistic view of their people, and assume that they are naturally unmotivated and dislike work. As a result, they think that team members need to be prompted, rewarded or punished constantly to make sure that they complete their tasks. This theory and style of management assume the following: 1. The workers dislike their work. 2. The workers avoid responsibility and need constant direction. 3. The workers have to be controlled, forced and threatened to deliver work. 4. The workers need to be supervised at every step. AND/OR 5. The workers have no incentive to work or ambition, and therefore need to be enticed by rewards to achieve goals. What is Theory Y? Theory Y managers have an optimistic, positive opinion of their people, and they use a decentralized, participative management style. This encourages a more collaborative , trust-based relationship between managers and their team members. This theory and style of management assumes that workers are: 1. Happy to work on their own initiative. 2. More involved in decision making. 3. Self-motivated to complete their tasks. 4. Enjoy taking ownership of their work. 5. Seek and accept responsibility, and need little direction. 6. View work as fulfilling and challenging. 7. Solve problems creatively and imaginatively. Theory Z focuses on increasing employee loyalty to the company by providing a job for life with a strong focus on the well-being of the employee, both on and off the job. According to Ouchi, Theory Z management tends to promote stable employment, high productivity, and high employee morale and satisfaction. Theory Z represents a humanistic approach to management. While Theory Z is similar to Theory Y in many ways, Theory Y is a largely psychological perspective focusing on individual dyads of employer-employee relationships while Theory Z changes the level of analysis to the entire organization. According to Professor Ouchi, Theory Z organizations exhibit a strong, homogeneous set of cultural values that are similar to clan cultures. The Type Z organization is characterized by concern for employees that goes beyond the workplace. Though, this philosophy is more consistent with the Japanese model than the North American model.
