At the end of World War II, Allied forces uncovered Nazi Germany’s secret nuclear reactor buried beneath a church in the town of Haigerloch. Hidden in a nearby field were 664 uranium cubes — but when the Americans dug them up, only 659 were there. The other five were never found. In this episode, we trace the rise and collapse of Germany’s atomic program: from the discovery of nuclear fission, to Heisenberg’s failed reactor experiments, to the sabotage campaigns against Norway’s heavy water supply, and the Allied Alsos mission that raced to seize the Reich’s nuclear research before it vanished into Soviet hands. What were the missing cubes for? Who took them? And how could one of the most advanced scientific programs in the world end in a cave, a buried reactor, and five missing pieces of uranium that may still be out there today? This is the story of WWII’s mysterious missing nuclear cubes.
