Welcome to the first leg of a seven-day self-drive photo safari through South Africa’s iconic Kruger National Park. In this episode, we begin our journey at Punda Maria in the far north of the park and travel southward to Shingwedzi. This quieter region of Kruger offers unique scenery, from ancient baobabs and open mopani woodland to sightings of elephants, buffalo, and an array of birdlife. Along the way, I’ll be sharing the road conditions, the rhythm of the drive, and the small moments that make Kruger such a remarkable place for the reflective traveller and photographer alike. This series is intended for photographers and nature enthusiasts who prefer a slower, more mindful travel experience — with a focus on observation, appreciation, and the quiet rewards of the bushveld. Whether you’re planning your own Kruger visit, or simply enjoy the vicarious experience of a well-paced safari, I hope you find inspiration in this journey. Route: Punda Maria to Shingwedzi (via main and optional backroads) Approximate distance: 80 km Travel time: Full day with stops for photography and observation Gear used: 2 x Nikon D850 bodies, Nikon ZF (for video), Nikkor 600 F4, Nikkor 70 - 200 F2.8, Sigma 150-600 contemporary. About this series: This is the first leg of a 7-day self-drive photo safari across Kruger, travelling from north to south, with an emphasis on photography, personal insight, and the immersive experience of being in nature.
