If you're just getting started with Chia, you'll be installing the Chia Blockchain software, creating your keychain/wallet, and then syncing your full node. You can start plotting right away, but farming will have to wait till you're synced. In reality, you're looking at a day (with an amazing node) to two weeks or more (with older gear) to sync up over 4.2 million blocks. Sounds like more fun than one person should be able to have, right? I'm going to help you save most of that time with a relatively quick BitTorrent download. A full video walk-through of the process is coming, but for now, here's what you can do to accelerate your initial Chia Network blockchain sync. 1. Get the Chia software and the snapshot torrent from https://chia.net/downloads/ 2. Install a bittorrent client if you don't already have one. I use µTorrent Classic from https://www.utorrent.com/. Your NAS might even have one available in its app store. 3. Open the torrent file and let it download. This will use about 68GB of disk space and take a couple of hours. 4. Get a refreshing beverage. Or honestly, maybe a couple. Check progress every so often, and in 1-24 hours, come back. 5. Extract the database file from the tar.gz file with your favorite archiver. Winzip, 7zip, PowerArchiver, WinRAR are all options, or on Linux or Mac OS you can use the 'tar' command from the command line. This step will need around 130GB of disk space, and this need will grow with the blockchain. 6. Stop the Chia Blockchain software 7. If your .chia directory has room, just copy the file into the correct path and filename as shown on https://wiki.spacefarmers.io/guides/f... - if you do not have room, you'll want to move the Chia db using those instructions. 8. Start the Chia Blockchain software and make sure it's syncing from the snapshot date. It may take a while to check the blockchain snapshot so don't worry too much about the spinny circles for a while. It took me about 4-5 hours to sync from the June 2023 snapshot to September 9th, on an i5-12400 PC with 32GB RAM running Windows 11, using a Samsung 860 QVO 1TB SSD for the database and downloads. Faster storage would probably make the most difference, but whipping out a 4x 1TB NVMe array seems like overkill. --- The "rig" I'm using as a baseline system: HP Pavilion TP01-3016, i5-12400, 12gb RAM - https://amzn.to/3Lhotyu Samsung 860 QVO 1TB - https://amzn.to/3Lhotyu KingSpec DDR4 32GB 3200MHz - https://amzn.to/3sORxqJ FIDECO external SATA enclosure - https://amzn.to/3PvcvDM 8TB SATA hard drive - like https://amzn.to/44MXXUu I got the computer for under $300 locally with 256GB NVMe (SN530) instead of 512GB. The SSD was $33 + tax and shipping on eBay. The memory and SATA enclosure came from Amazon Vine. The hard drive I have is a WD80EZAZ "shucked" external drive I've had for years. If I were buying again for this, and didn't have the drives and RAM in house already, I'd go with a smaller faster SSD, the cheapest RAM I could get, and probably a larger drive. Alternately, I could upgrade the boot NVMe and use it for temp space (since this machine would be dedicated to Chia work--don't do this with your main desktop or laptop), or possibly get a faster external SSD with USB-C on the front of the PC. --- Chapters: 00:00 Opening 00:18 Chia Network software download page and the Snapshot Torrent 00:30 Database Checkpoint downloads 00:45 Where the Chia Blockchain database lives by default 01:00 Spacefarmers.io guide to moving your Chia database and wallet 01:15 Basic steps for deploying the Chia Blockchain database snapshot 01:29 Starting to watch the database sync from 4081997 of 4206014 blocks at 9:36am 08:27 Still syncing... 4095085 / 4206014 at 09:56am 18:28 4115149 / 4206014 at 10:26 28:30 4133901 / 4206014 at 10:56 38:29 4154189 / 4206014 at 11:26 48:29 4172397 / 4206014 at 11:56 58:28 4192269 / 4206014 at 12:26pm 1:06:16 Synced to 4206014, goes "not synced" to retarget at 12:48pm - 4206014 / 4207773 1:07:24 Finally synced to current at 12:52pm --- See more of my crypto writing at https://rsts11.com/rsts11 Like, subscribe, turn on notifications, share with a friend, leave a comment, they all help the channel grow, and also may eventually help fund new gear to cover on the channel and the associated blogs.
