On October 31, 1926, Harry Houdini - infamous escape artist and legendary debunker of mediums - passed away. When Houdini arrived at the Garrick Theater in Detroit, Michigan, on October 24, 1926, for what would be his last performance, he had a fever of 104 °F (40 °C). Despite the diagnosis, Houdini took the stage. He was reported to have passed out during the show, but was revived and continued on. Afterwards, he was hospitalized at Detroit's Grace Hospital where he died from peritonitis (swelling of the abdomen), caused by acute appendicitis on October 31, aged 52. Tonight, Friday, October 31, 2025, we celebrate the 99th anniversary of his passing in the most dramatic way we know how - a Houdini Séance! That's right - we're hosting the first annual Skeptical Help Bar Houdini Séance here in the dungeons (library) of the Center for Inquiry. Joining us for the spookiness will be Melanie & Anthony Trecek-King (Thinking is Power), Tim Redmon (teacher & author), Tim Binga (CFI Librarian), and more! *Maybe even a special guest. We'll start the how with some chat among our spirit circle guests, get into some history of Houdini death and the seances over the years that have tried to get Harry back. We'll even touch on the Arthur Ford hoax.
