The word entheogen was coined in 1979 by Johnathan Ott and is derived from the Greek word entheos meaning “full of god” and genesthai which translates to “generating”. These two greek words combined form the word entheogen, which roughly translates to “generating the god within”. The word entheogen has been used to describe naturally occurring psycho-active substances used in rituals and ceremonies for spiritual context and connection to higher levels of consciousness. Some examples of entheogens include cannabis, peyote and psilocybin mushrooms. Although, chanting and dancing ceremonies have also been regarded as entheogenic practices. Entheogenic plant substances, sacred ceremonies and rituals have been used by indigenous cultures dating back to the 5th century BCE. In modern days, the term entheogen refers to any psychoactive substance used to connect to higher beings and elevated states of consciousness within or absent from traditional structure and ceremony, and has made its way as a household name.
