They are most famous for their unique symbiotic relationship with larger marine animals, especially sharks. These nimble fish navigate through the ocean by riding the pressure waves created by their larger companions, which helps them conserve energy. In return for this free ride, pilot fish provide a service to their hosts by eating parasites and leftover scraps of food, thereby helping to keep them clean and healthy. This mutually beneficial relationship is a remarkable example of cooperation in the wild, showcasing the complex interactions within marine ecosystems.
