ZAIRE: REFUGEES CONTINUE FLEEING FROM ADVANCE OF TUTSI REBELS

(3 Nov 1996) Natural Sound Tens of thousands of refugees continue to flee from camps around Goma in Eastern Zaire to escape the advance of Tutsi rebels. A seemingly endless line of refugees is trudging northward past the once teeming Kibumba refugee camp near Goma. Once capable of providing shelter for hundreds of thousands of people the Kibumba refugee camp now looks nearly empty. From the relative safety of a Rwanda hillside, a column of refugees could be see across the border in Zaire heading northwards Sunday, towards safety. Tutsi rebels are believed to control large swaths of land in this eastern region, beating off attempts by the Zairean army to regain the land. The fighting between the Tutsi rebels and Zairian troops that flared last month has scattered more than 1 million refugees. The last international aid workers fled the shooting Saturday, leaving the displaced masses with barely a week's rations and no medical assistance. Many people have escaped over the Rwandan border and are now sheltering in transit camps such as Nkmira camp seen here. Facilities are basic or non-existent, with people making do with what they can lay their hands on. But at least here in Rwanda the refugees feel they are safer from the violence that put their lives at risk back in Zaire.
