Normal dimensions are defined for the cardiac structures including the interventricular septum and the posterior wall of the left ventricle. Typically if the interventricular septum is more than 1.1 cm in thickness then it is considered to be hypertrophy. Hypertrophy can happen because of various reasons. Increased load on the left ventricle as would be seen in people with chronic high blood pressure or those who have aortic valve narrowing or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and sometimes also in athletes where the cut off limit is 1.1 cm. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a congenital condition and runs in families. The person will have increased thickness of the muscles of the heart by variable distribution right from childhood and the interventricular septum will be grossly thickened. So 0.9 cm thicikness of the septum is not considered to be increased.
