Background: The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men /Gang aft agley – this talk was due to take place at the BPS Division of Occupational Psychology Annual Conference on 9th January 2015 in Glasgow (http://www.bps.org.uk/events/conferen...) as one of the DOP-Scotland sponsored slots in the conference however the inclement Scottish weather on the night of the 8th January resulted in the session being cancelled on the day, with all travel in Scotland being disrupted and effectively brought to a halt. Subsequently on 11th March 2015, Dr Renée Bleau, the DOP-Scotland link coordinator, made a trip to St Andrews to meet Professor Reicher so he might resume on the subject of the Psychology of the Referendum. In his abstract, Professor Reicher contends that “Psychology is often marginalised from debate of social issues, even when psychological processes lie at the core of the relevant issue.” Thus, in this discussion, Professor Reicher highlights the importance of psychological processes with a specific focus on the psychology of leadership. Professor Stephen D Reicher is a Professor of Social Psychology and former Head of the School of Psychology at the University of St Andrews. He has published widely in the field of social psychology, and of particular relevance for this discussion, is his co-authored book: The New Psychology of Leadership (with S.A. Haslam, and M.J. Platow). Dr Renée Bleau is the DOP-Scotland link coordinator on the DOP Annual Conference Organising Committee. She is an honorary research fellow in the School of Education, University of Glasgow and an Independent Organisational Consultant at Putting Psychology to Work.
