Dhulikhel Hospital collaboration with Australia

Nepal is a landlocked country located in South Asia, situated mainly in the Himalayas between China and India. Nepal is known for its diverse geography including mountains, fertile plains, hills and valleys and a rich cultural heritage. While Nepal has seen significant developments over the years, challenges persist such as in the field of Maternal and child health. The maternal mortality of Nepal is 151 per 100,000 and infant mortality is 23 per 1000 births. Dhulikhel Hospital is an independent, non-profit, community hospital established in 1996 by Dr. Ram K.M. Shrestha with the vision to provide "Quality affordable healthcare services to all." The central hospital along with the 18 Outreach centers covers a population of approximately 2.5 million people providing health services as well as community support programs. Among the outreach centers, Dolakha hospital is the largest one, a 50-bedded hospital serving a catchment of almost 5,00,000 people in rural Nepal. With the support from Dr. Ray Hodson, David Mayne and the Australian Rotary, we laid the foundation for a Women and child hospital in Dolakha. The first cath lab of Dhulikhel hospital was also established with the support from Australian people. Dr. Ray has been working with Dhulikhel Hospital since the past 12 years. He has also been involved academically in teaching post graduate students. His clinical work focused on women's health especially Pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence of urine. He also introduced the transobturator taping procedure in Nepal for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Till now, more than 300 women have benefited with this treatment. The Women and child hospital building will be completed in 2024. It will help to bolster the Community health support program in Dolakha and uplift the health of women and children in Dolakha and peripheries.
