In this lecture, we study the deductions of gas laws using the kinetic theory of gases, showing how the fundamental gas laws emerge naturally from molecular motion. We begin by deriving Boyle’s law, which relates pressure and volume at constant temperature, followed by Charles’ law, which explains the linear dependence of volume on temperature at constant pressure. These deductions lead to the ideal gas equation, providing a unified macroscopic description of gas behavior. This lecture builds a strong conceptual bridge between microscopic molecular dynamics and macroscopic thermodynamic laws. Topics covered in this lecture: • Deduction of Boyle’s law from kinetic theory • Deduction of Charles’ law from kinetic theory • Pressure–volume relationship at constant temperature • Volume–temperature relationship at constant pressure • Deduction of the ideal gas equation • Physical interpretation of gas laws • Importance and limitations of the deductions This topic is essential for Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics and is frequently tested in IIT-JAM, CSIR-NET, GATE, JEST, TIFR, UPSC Physics Optional, as well as BSc and MSc Physics coursesphysics curricula.
