SANDRA VOLNY / FOSSILES SONORES 02 mars - 14 mai 2023 [https://bit.ly/3U1VG47] Il y a un peu plus d’un an, l’artiste Sandra Volny présentait derrière le comptoir de l’accueil de la Fonderie Darling une série d’études sur la façon dont la matière peut se transformer au contact des vibrations de nos environnements sonores. Entremêlant l’expérimentation artistique, la collaboration scientifique et la poésie narrative du récit, il s’agissait des premières tentatives pour résoudre une question qui persiste dans ses recherches et hante l’artiste : comment penser les fossiles autrement que sous la forme de minéraux, transmettre les traces de leur existence et leur vécu à travers le son ? L’exposition Fossiles Sonores est en partie l’aboutissement de ces recherches, intensément matérialisées lors des trois dernières années, alors que Sandra Volny termine sa résidence dans les Ateliers Montréalais de la Fonderie Darling. Cette exposition rassemble dans l’espace de la Petite galerie ses trois plus récents projets, en dialogue avec la nouvelle La vallée des échos, un récit de science-fiction se déroulant sur la planète Mars écrit en 1959 par Gérard Klein. L’exposition Fossiles Sonores rassemble une série de monolithes en acier cristallisant les vibrations de la Terre dans la matière, en relation avec une bande sonore de ces vibrations. L’enregistrement de sons émis par notre environnement sont omniprésents mais a priori inaudibles. Inspirée par les sols glacés de l’Antarctique, les sons de la veine de fer de Schefferville et par l’environnement réverbérant de la Fonderie Darling, Fossiles Sonores transporte l’imaginaire vers un monde lointain, minéral, céleste, difficilement situable entre l’ancien et le futur, entre le terrestre et le cosmique. À travers un réel engagement scientifique et le filtre de l’expérience sensible, cette exposition imagine une manière de matérialiser les voix de la Terre, transmettre ce passage du son à travers l’espace et le temps, en confrontant les époques et les géographies. Se faisant et inévitablement, Sandra Volny propage la « survivance de ces espaces sonores » à notre propre corporalité. — SANDRA VOLNY / FOSSILES SONORES March 02 - May 14 2023 [https://bit.ly/3ZBrPQW] A little over a year ago, artist Sandra Volny presented a series of studies behind the Fonderie Darling's reception desk exploring how matter can be transformed by the vibrations of our sonic environments. Intertwining artistic experimentation, scientific collaboration, and the narrative poetry of storytelling, these were early attempts to resolve a question that persists in her research and haunts her: how to think of fossils as something other than minerals, to convey their existence and experience through sound? The exhibition Fossiles Sonores (Sonic Fossils) is in part the culmination of this research, intensely materialized over the past three years, as Sandra Volny completes her residency in the Montreal Studios. This exhibition brings together her three most recent projects in the Small Gallery space, positioning them in dialogue with the short story La vallée des échos (The Valley of Echoes), a science fiction story written in 1959 by Gérard Klein and set on the planet Mars. Fossiles Sonores gathers a series of steel monoliths that crystallize the vibrations of the Earth in matter alongside a soundtrack of these vibrations, of sounds emitted by our environment that are omnipresent but a priori inaudible. Inspired by the icy soil of Antarctica, the sounds of the iron veins of Schefferville and the reverberating environment of the Fonderie Darling, Fossiles Sonores transports the imagination to a distant, mineral, celestial world, situated between the ancient and the future, between the terrestrial and the cosmic. Through a genuine scientific commitment and the filter of sensitive experience, this exhibition seeks to materialize the voices of the Earth, to transmit this passage of sound through space and time, confronting eras and geographies.
