Use 6" of a 100% cotton, cotton ball. Don't use the synthetics out there. You'll only need an eighth to a sixteenth of a teaspoon of tobacco. Roll it in the cotton tightly with your fingers. Further tighten it with forward strokes of you hand and then forward strokes of the top board. Now, roll it back and forth with the top board applying as much downward pressure as the roll can withstand without making it flattening out. After about 20 rolls, one roll is a forward and return, look for smoke. Keep rolling it until you see smoke. Give the ember a chance to surface from the core. It'll take 30 to 60 seconds and sometimes longer. Never tear into a fire roll thinking, "that will give it more oxygen and make it take off".
