This is the history of the creation of the Oscar Trophy. A certificate of merit known as the "Academy Award of Merit" has been given by AMPAS to actors and actresses who have won prizes in the five major categories since 1941. The Oscars will henceforth be known as "The Academy Awards," according to AMPAS's 2002 announcement. Over the years, there have been many changes and controversies surrounding the Oscars, including recent boycotts by some actors and directors in response to the underrepresentation of minorities in the nominees.
